Talk about good publicity - to create a buzz in the fashion world for the opening of Tron: Legacy, Disney asked Canadian designer Jerome C. Rousseau to create a Tron inspired shoe. And create he did:
The shoe comes in pewter and gold and will be available in February, retailing for a heartbreaking $795. The futuristic feel of the film and Quorra - played by the stunning Olivia Wilde - were the inspirations for Rousseau's shoe. Rousseau has designed his Spring 2011 collection around the original Tron, stating that: “In keeping with my label’s strengths, I created a style that is distinctive and strong, like the architectural nature of Tron, yet anchored in feminine lines and luxurious constructions."
How did the collabo come about? Disney, being the powerhouse that they are, appealed to fashion in more than one way to promote the film. Disney called on Balenciaga and Versace to design women's and menswear lines, respectively, with a Tron feel to them, and decided even those two heavy hitters weren't enough for the type of futuristic bang they wanted.
“When we first were given Tron to work a consumer prospective from, the edgy, high-tech aspect immediately inspired me to do something different—since we were not appealing to children or tweens, it was an enticing challenge and I immediately started looking for unusual suspects, and that’s when I came across an article on Jerome C. Rousseau,” explains Stephanie Kraus, VP Global Creative at Disney Consumer Products. Talk about right place at the right time - that article led to Jerome C. Rousseau creating one of the most talked about items of the season. Rousseau, Canadian bred but based out of LA, was given creative free rein and shown clips of the new film for fresh inspiration.
"I didn’t want to make something gimmicky. I wanted it to be something women wanted to wear, not just a salute to Tron—something that conveyed the mood and cool modernity of Tron without falling into a trap of a contrived design.”
So, ladies, did he succeed? I'd love to see these babies on, so if anyone wants to buy a pair and send em my way....
