Bell Lightbox - The Film Scene in Toronto

Far from being active only during TIFF, the Bell Lightbox at King & John is currently showing the Tim Burton exhibit from MoMA, New York. The exhibit features the Burton Blitz, a marathon of his most iconic films, as well as a host of other things including his experimental films, sketches, sculptures, screenplays and so on. The Bell Lightbox is also up to a number of other things, all of which will be of interest to future filmmakers, screenwriters, actors, and anyone interested in film.

First, the Bell Lightbox programme for this evening, December Ninth:

Wasteland

From Brazil, this 90 minute film focuses on visual artist Vik Muniz, who fashions high art out of trash. A soundtrack done by Moby brings this film to an otherworldly level, and the film itself is stirring, connecting beauty in art to the strength of the human spirit. Plays from Dec. 9-15.

 Offside

Filmed during the 2006 Iran-Bahrain World Cup qualifying match, a group of football-loving girls come to watch and cheer for Iran's national team. They are discovered and thrown out of the stadium but not to worry - director Jafan Pahani creates his first comedy out of the situation. Plays tonight at 9pm!

La Noire de...
Director Ousmane Sembene receives worldwide acclaim following his debut feature. La Noire focuses on a young Senegalese woman and parallels her to the legacy of colonialism: Diouana is invited to move to France to work as a nanny for a wealthy couple, who promise her a better life. Once there, she realizes that they are taking advantage of her, forcing her to work as a common servant because of her race. This film is thought provoking to say the very least. Plays on Dec 13th at 4pm.
